Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
How do I start tracking my steps?
Once you download Steply from the App Store, open the app and grant access to Apple Health when prompted. Steply will automatically start counting your steps—no manual setup required!
What iOS version is required?
Steply requires iOS 16.0 or later to ensure optimal performance and access to the latest HealthKit features.
Do I need an Apple Watch?
No! Steply works perfectly with just your iPhone. However, an Apple Watch provides more accurate step counting and heart rate monitoring during walks.
How do I enable GPS tracking?
Tap the 'Start Walk' button on the main screen to begin live GPS tracking. Make sure you've granted Steply location permissions in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
Features & Widgets
How do I add widgets to my Home Screen?
Long-press on your Home Screen, tap the '+' icon in the top-left corner, search for 'Steply', and pick a widget style such as Today's Progress, 7-Day Trend, or Streak Counter.
How do I add widgets to my Lock Screen?
Long-press on your Lock Screen, tap 'Customize', then tap the widget area below the time. Search for 'Steply' and add your preferred widget to see steps without unlocking your phone.
What is Live Activity on Dynamic Island?
When you start a walk with GPS tracking, Steply shows real-time step count and distance on your Dynamic Island (iPhone 14 Pro and newer). It updates live as you walk!
How accurate is the step counter?
Steply uses the Apple HealthKit framework, which combines data from your iPhone's motion sensors and Apple Watch (if connected). This provides the most accurate step counting available on iOS.
GPS & Route Tracking
Why isn't my route showing on the map?
Make sure you've granted Steply location permissions in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Also ensure Location Services is enabled system-wide and set to 'While Using the App' or 'Always'.
Can I save my favorite walking routes?
Yes! After completing a walk, tap the 'Save Route' button to add it to your favorites. You can view all saved routes in the Route History section.
Does GPS tracking drain my battery?
Steply is optimized for battery efficiency. GPS is only active when you're actively tracking a walk. Stop tracking when you're done to conserve battery.
Can I see elevation changes on my routes?
Yes! Steply tracks elevation gain and loss during your walks. View elevation data in your route history after completing a tracked walk.
Goals & Tracking
How do I change my daily step goal?
Tap the Settings icon, then 'Daily Goal', and choose your target from 1,000 to 50,000 steps. The 10,000 step challenge is the default and most popular goal.
What is the streak counter?
Your streak shows how many consecutive days you've reached your daily step goal. Keep hitting your target to maintain your streak!
How are calories calculated?
Steply calculates calories using your step count, distance, walking pace, and heart rate (if available). Heart rate monitoring provides the most accurate calorie estimates.
Can I track running as well as walking?
Absolutely! Steply tracks all movement—walking, running, hiking, and more. Your total step count includes all activities recorded by Apple Health.
Heart Rate & Health
How do I track my heart rate during walks?
Steply automatically tracks heart rate during GPS walks if you're wearing an Apple Watch connected to your iPhone. Heart rate data flows through Apple Health and is used to refine calorie estimates on your device.
Do I need a chest strap for heart rate monitoring?
No! Steply uses heart rate data recorded by your Apple Watch—no additional hardware required. Apple Watch provides accurate continuous heart rate monitoring during walks.
What health metrics does Steply track?
Steply tracks steps, distance (miles or kilometers), active calories burned, walking/running pace, heart rate, elevation, and daily/weekly trends—all synced from Apple Health.
Data & Privacy
Where is my data stored?
All your health data stays on your iPhone. Steply uses the Apple HealthKit framework, which keeps everything secure and private on your device. Nothing is sent to external servers.
Can I export my step data?
Your raw step data is always available through the Apple Health app, which supports data export. Steply focuses on beautiful visualization and motivation within the app.
Does Steply share my data with advertisers?
Never. Steply has no ads, no tracking, and no data sharing. Your health information is completely private and stays on your device.
Troubleshooting
My steps aren't showing up in Steply
Make sure you've granted Steply permission to read step data from Apple Health. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > Steply and enable 'Steps' and 'Walking + Running Distance'.
The app seems slow or crashes
Try force-closing and reopening Steply. If issues persist, restart your iPhone or reinstall the app from the App Store — your data is safe in Apple Health and will reload automatically. If the problem continues, please contact us at [email protected] with your iPhone model and iOS version so we can investigate.
I'm not receiving goal notifications
Check that notifications are enabled for Steply in Settings > Notifications > Steply. Also verify that Focus mode or Do Not Disturb isn't blocking alerts.
GPS tracking won't start
Ensure Location Services is enabled system-wide (Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services) and that Steply has permission to access your location 'While Using the App'.
